The vibrant “little” town Killarney, or also Cill Airne, meaning “church of sloes” is a city in the southwest of Irland, with a population of 12,740 habitants. What´s interesting about Kilarney is that it´s beautiful natural enviroment, because it is part of Killarney National Park. It is directly situated at one of the three Killarney lakes, Lough Leane, which means “lake of learning”. This name comes probably from a monastery that had existed on an isle of the lake and where according to a legend king Brian Boru was educated.

Apart from Killarney´s surroundings Killarney´s good reputation as one of the best preserved cities and also as a very clean city have helped to attrakt many tourists, and tourism is one of the most important Economic sources for the region. After Dublin Killarney is the city with most accomodations in Irland. The town of Killarney itself is relatively young, nontheless it is a place where many 18th century buildings are still preserved. Some of them are Killarney House (from the 1740´s), Deenagh Lodge, Killarney Courthouse, the Railway station and the Malton Hotel.

Most of the people who come to Killarney want to enjoy the countryside with its lakes and mountains. What is very popular with the visitors are daytrips to the Ring of Kerry, which offers major attraktions like Rossbeigh beach, the Torc waterfall, which is especially popular with hikers and walkers, Moll’s Gap which is formed by red sandstone and offers a view of the  Macgillycuddy’s Reeks mountains, and Muckross Abbey, a Franciscan friary that was founded in 1448.

Natural enviroment

Thanks to the geographical location Killarney´s national park enjoys a mild climate but also a high rate of rainfall, what made the growing of a rich and variable vegetation possible. The Park counts with 32 hectares of yew wood, what means that it is the biggest yew wood in Europe, and also the most extensive oak woodland in the country.

Apart from the woods there are also a series of gardens in Killarney and the Kerry and West Cork area, with such a rich botanical flora and fauna that they are literary unique.  The following places are really worth visiting:

Muckross

Its agricultores have preserved the traditional lifestyle and way of farming, just as it was before the industrialization for many centuries.

Glaneam

It is placed on Valentina Island and has a precious landscape. The Glanleam House is surrounded by 16 hectares of subtropical garden designed in Robinsonian style. The place can be visited from April to October.

Dreen Gardens

A beautiful place for a walk, especially in spring, when the trees and flowers come into blossom.

Garnish Island

Garnish Island, or also Ilnacullin (“Island of holly” in Irish) is renowned for its gardens, designed by Harold Peto in the 19th century. On this island writers like CB Shaw and AE used to live. The Gardens are designed with a strong Japanese influence and contain south American and oriental trees. This is only possible due to its mild humid micro-climate. Buildings of interest are the clock tower, the Grecian temple, the Martello Tower and the Italian Temple, especially the Italian tea house is popular with visitors.

Knockreer House

It is within walking distance from Killarney, and recommendable, especially because the way offers excellent views of the lower lake, the Tomies mountain and the MC Gillcuddy Reeks.

Derrynane

This village is located on the Iveragh peninsula. It counts with the Derrynane house, which was home of Daniel O´Connell and Ebhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill, a noted poet and composer of Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire. Apart for the house there is a 1.3 km² National Park with a Dolmen that probably dates back from 3000 BC. From the Ivergah peninsula the  Skellig Islands can be visited. What is also interesting about the area is that Vincent Hyland, a media creator, documented for 20 years a diary of Derrynane´s underwater wildlife. This diary can be read online.

Skelling Islands

Those are two islands that are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, 12 km from the Iveragh Peninsula. On the bigger isle the remains of a monastery from the 6th century can be visited. The monastery and the isle are declared UNESCO World heritage, as Skellig Michael is considered to be of “esceptional universal value”, and a “unique example of an early religious settlement”. As the island consists mainly of cliffs and the access to the monastery is made of rocks , it is only permited to travel to the island while it is not raining or windy.

Climate

The best time to travel to Killarney is probably between July and August. In the months between October and February rainfall is rather frequent. Ireland has a clear advantage throught its geographical situation. The Atlantic Ocean provides the isle with a mild climate, therefore in winter temeratures below -10°C are uncommon. The same happens in summer, the temperatures do almost never exceed 30°C. English Course in Killarney has everything you need. We also recommend English Course in London.
