History
The history of London is a long history of up and downs:
London, or Londinium, was founded by the Romans in 47 after Chirst, not being more than a little settlement in the North of the river Thames, surrounded by a city wall. (Built in 1209, the London Bridge was the only bridge crossing the river until 1739. So even noweadays the biggest part of the city is still located on the Northern side.) 410 after Christ, the Roman legions left the city and the inhabitants had to suffer many attacks from different rivalling groups. So shortly after, all what remained was a field of ruins.
In the 7th century, the Anglo-Saxons finally reconquerred and resettled the area within the city walls, calling it Lundenburgh. 1066, the Normans took power over the city.
In the course of the reformation (16th century), London enjoyed an economical growth and became on of the most important trading towns at that time.
In the middle of the 17th century, this developpment stopped. London was suffering two severe catastrophes: It was hit by the Black Death and by a big fire. Many people died, many buildings got destroyed. But the city got rebuilt.
In the 18th and 19th century, the city grew out of its city walls. New bridges were built so that the city could expand into the South. Big inventions took place. London was the place where the first Great Exhibition took place.
During the Second World War, London was attacked by the German Airfore in two heavy attempts during which lots of people died and lots of buildings got destroyed, especially in the industrial area.
Districts
London is divided into 32 districts. The most important ones for sightseeing are without doubt:
City of London: Historical and economical center of London, once surrounded by the London City Wall built by the Romans. Although only relatively few people live in the City of London, it is crowded with hundreds of thousands of people during daytime, who come to work from outside. Seat of the Bank of England. Seat of the first stock market of England.
City of Westminster: Seat of the British government. Buckingham Palace, Westminster Palace, Covent Garden, Hyde Park, Oxford etc.
Camden: Very attractive for tourists because of it houses many museums, the London Zoo, Camden Market and many important train stations.
Greenwich: Initial point of the zero meridian, which was also long time called Greenwich meridian.
Means of transport
In London you will easily get from one place to the other. You find over 700 bus lines and a vast subway-system (London Underground is the oldest subway system worldwide!).

Be aware that, if you want to go through the city center by car, you will be charged a fee (London Congestion Charge) of about 10 Pounds per day. Why not better take one of the famous black taxis?
And if you want to visit other English cities, there are great train connections.
London is an important center of the European and worldwide air transport.
The biggest airports are Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, City Airport and London Southend Airport. Heathrow and City Airport are located inside Greater London (Heathrow with its own subway station), the other ones outside. Gatwick, Heathrow and Stanstedt are connected with the city by Airport-Express-Trains.
Climate
The climate of London is moderate. That means that the summers are worm but seldom hot and the winters are cool but the temperatures go rarely under 0 Celsius. The wormest month is July with an average temperature of 16,3 Celsius and the coolest month is January with an average temperature of 3,9 Celsius. October, November and December are the months with most rain.

Buckingham Palace: Principal workplace of the Queen and her family!
London Eye: Take a ride in the tallest Ferris Wheel in Europe and have a spectacular view over London!
