On one side, Brighton is a university city – housing the University of Brighton and the Univesity of Sussex – which attracts students from all over the world. On the other side, it is a famous seaside resort with lots of bookstores, restaurants and amusement halls where families from the surroundings spend their weekends or their summer holidays. Because of its many visitors from London, the city is also widely known as “London by the Sea”.
And Brighton is famous for some other facts: Did you know that Brighton has been the location in many books and films?
And did you know that it was in Brighton where the famous Swedish band ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974?
History
Brighton was founded by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century.
In 1514, the small fisher down was burnt down to its foundation walls by a French armada, but was rebuilt shortly after. From then on it constantly grew so that in 1660 the city had already about 4.000 inhabitants. In the early 18th century, Brighton nearly vanished again because of heavy storms. Big parts of the land right at the coast got lost because the city didn´t have any dams (Those were not build before 1930). By that time, the number of inhabitants decreased to 1.500 people again.
But a big boom came with the settlement of a famous doctor, Dr. Richard Russell, who wrote a book about the good effect of sea water on the health system, especially in Brighton. He opened a practice and from then on more and more rich people came to Brighton to cure their diseases. Brighton soon became a Health Resort. It became an even more famous place when in 1786, the Prince Regent and later King George IV. bought himself a house in Brighton to spend his summers here. The Royal Pavilion is today one of the most famous tourist sights of the city.
In 1823, the first pier was built. Since 1841, there is a train connection with London.
During the Second World War, Brighton suffered serious attacks from the German Air Raid.
Means of transport
As the city is situated right at the sea, it provides great promenades and is the perfect place for walking and cycling friends.
For everyone who wants to leave the city once in a while,Brighton has its own little train station with quick train connections to London and the surroundings.

Brighton does also provide its own little airport, Brighton City Airport. But the best way to come to Brighton by plane is going to London-Gatwick and then take a fast train to Brighton.

Climate
Brighton enjoys an oceanic climate, which means warm but not hot summers and cool but not cold winters. Because of the sea breeze, temperatures in Brighton tend to be a little lower than in the inland. The warmest month is August with an average high temperature of 21°C (average low 14 °C) and the coldest month is December with an average high temperature of 9°C (average low 4°C). The weather during summer is generally good, although rains occur. The winters are mild, but snow is not seldom.
Must-Do´s
If you have the luck to go to Brighton in summertime, there is nothing better than sunbathing at the beach. If you should get bored or hungry, take a break on the Brighton Pier which houses an amusement park with restaurants, bars and amusement halls and attracts thousands of tourists every year.
The Royal Pavilion: Built as a home for the Prince Regent in the 19th century. Famous for its Indo-Saracenic architecture and Oriental interior.
The Brighton Festival: If you should have the chance to go to Brighton in May, you should not miss the Brighton Festival. It is the second biggest art festival in Great Britain (behind Edinburgh) attracting about 500.000 visitors per year! During the festival many artists open the doors of their houses and present their art work.
Horse racing: If you want to see something typical English, you should not miss one of the many horse races on Brighton´s horse race track. The track is situated in the hills around Brighton and offers a great view over the city and the sea.
In addition to that, Brighton provides lots of museums and theatres, which are always worth a visit.
And what you certainly shouldn´t miss: As there are great train connections, you shouldn´t leave Brighton without having spent a day in the capital of England: London!
