A great city for taking your Spanish course is the city of Málaga. It is the second biggest city in Andalusia and the sixth biggest city in Spain. It lies in a valley surrounded by the Sierra de Mijas, Montes de Málaga and the Mediterranean Sea. Because of its lovely climate, it is one of the most important touristical spots on the Costa del Sol and in the whole of Spain. But not only the climate makes the city so interesting. History
Málaga was founded in the 8th century before Christ by the Phoenician. In the 3rd century before Christ, it became part of the Roman Empire and diverted into an important commercial space for seafarer from along the coast. During the migration of the peoples, Málaga changed its rulers many times. In 711, the moors came into power. The city became more and more important when the heirs of the caliphate of Cordoba built a residence here – the Alcazaba – which you can still visit. In 1487, the city was reconquerred by the Catholic Kings and the city became Christian.
During the Spanish Civil War, Málaga was front city. As it was the harbour of the Republican marine, it was an important strategical target. It was the location of the “Massacre of Málaga” in 1937, when approximately 10.000 people died.
District
Málaga is divided in 10 districts.Centro, Este, Ciudad Jardín, Bailén/Miraflores, Palma/Palmilla, Cruz de Humilladero, Carretera de Cádiz, Churriana, Campanillas and Puerto de la Torre.
The districts with the most attractions are without doubt Centro and Este.
In Centro, you find the pedestrian zone with its many shops, restaurants, cafés, museums, cinemas, theatres, the cathedral and a big newly renovated market hall. The Centro is also the place with the most historical attractions, like the impressive Castillo del Gibralfaro situated on a small mountain overlooking the harbour, the bullring and big parts of the city. And it is the place where you can enjoy the best nightlife.
In summertime, there is no better district then Málaga Este which provides the city´s best beaches. The sea is bordered by a beautiful promendade, where people enjoy doing sports, eating fresh sardines or contemplating an amazing sunset with a glass of wine in their hands.
While close-by cities like Sevilla, Cordoba and Granada are sweating from the heat, people in Málaga are able to enjoy a refreshing swim in the deep blue Mediterranean Sea.

In Málaga you will easily get from one place to the other. First of all, it is a great city for walking and cycling friends.

Climate
The city of Málaga enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means dry and hot summers and wet and mild winters. The yearly average temperature is 18 °C, August being the wormest month with 25,4°C (but days with a temperature over 40 °C are not an exception…) and January being the coldest month with 11,9 °C.
Must-Dos
In the summer, when the temperature goes up to 40 °C there is no better thing to do than spending your day on the beach in Pedregalejo or El Palo, enjoying a swim in the deep blue water and finishing the day in one of the beautiful small restaurants bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
Throughout the year it is nice to stroll through the city centre and enjoy the little hidden streets with their cute tapas bars and cafés. A must-do for all wine lovers is “El Pimpi”. It is the city´s most famous restaurant/bar where you can order the region´s typical sweet wine and where you find yourself surrounded by big wine barrels with signatures of all kind of famous persons, like for example Antonio Banderas, who was born in Málaga.
Another must-do is climbing up the Castillo del Gibralfaro and enjoying the beautiful view over the harbour and big parts of the city.
For all art-lovers: Málaga is the city where Pablo Picasso was born and lived big parts of his life. Go to Plaza de la Merced and visit his family house before you visit the Museo de Picasso in order to contemplate some of his best art works.
