History:
If you stroll through Florence, you will see the neverending line of historical buildings, palaces, churches and bridges. In short: Florence is famous for its history. Here we have collected some of the most important facts:
Florence was built in the times of the Roman emperor Julios Cesar, after 59 before Christ. It started as a military camp, which can still be noticed in its streets built in a chequerboard pattern. But because of its good position at the street going straight towards Rome and another street going straight to the sea, Florence slowly converted into the center of the medieval economy and finance, being one of the richest cities in the 15th and 16th century. This was the time when the rich family of the Medici was in power. As the personal finaciers of the Pope, the influence of the Medici was endless and with their money and political connections, they themselves gave Florence its present-day face. So it is also due to the Medici that Florence has gained its reputation as the “cradle of the Renaissance”. Lots of artists and scientists – among them: Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei – lived in Florence, enjoying the benefits of the Medici family and therefore being able to produce their arts. With the end of the Medici ended the cultural importance of Florence.
Only in the 19th century, Florence became political important again. From 1865 till 1870, Florence was even the capital of Italy. Today, the city is famous for its Renaissance architecture – like the famous cupola de Santa Maria del Fiore – and its museums, containing the most important Italian sculptures and paintings.

In Florence you have very warm summers and wet and cold winters with January being the coldest and July being the warmest month.

Have a look at some of the most famous Italian paintings and sculptures in the Uffizi! But be aware that you might stand a long time in line…
Stroll over the beautiful bridge Ponte Vecchio, the only bridge which has not been destroyed in the Second World War, and have a look into the showcases of the various jewellry shops there. If you walk with your beloved on, bring a lock with you and put it onto one of the balustrades as a sign of “neverending love”.
Climb up the tower of the beautiful Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore and have a great view over the beautiful historical center of Florence.
To have an even more vaste overview over Florence, its rivers and its bridges, climb up the little hill San Miniato until you reach the Piazzale Michelangelo.
Go shopping in the little streets around the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore. Florence is famous for its little stationary shops, where you can buy things like penholder made of glass or signet rings.
Eat a piece of traditional Italian pizza! And continue with a big waffle covered in hot chocolate which you can find all over the city.
What to do in the surroundings:
Pisa: You cannot leave the Toscany without having seen the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa! With Pisa just being about 85 km away, this trip is perfect for an afternoon.
Lucca: Spend another day in Lucca, being about 80km away. This city is famous for its huge Plazas, the Roman churches and the medieval towers, still showing the city´s importance in the 12th and 13th century, being famous for its textile industry.
Conclusion:
Florence offers a lot for students interested in culture AND nightlife. Personal tip: Bring your boy- or girlfriend with you. There is no place more romantic than Toscany!
