England’s sixth most populous city Bristol is situated in the south west, around the river Avon and has an estimated population of 433,100. Initially founded in c. 1000 and known by the name Brycstow ( in Old English “the place at the bridge”, the city’s most important income ever since has been through its port. By the 12th century its importance begun to rise so that by the 13th century it Bristol ranked amongst the top three English cities. The access to the sea made trade with Spain and its American colonies possible. Later on it gained importance through the rise of the English colonies in the New World. Bristol’s fleet was busy trading with slaves. It actually became a centre of the Triangular trade that took Africans to America in order to sell them as slaves. Once the slaves were sold, the ships were laden with commodities and brought back to Bristol.
These days Bristol plays an important part regarding employment, education, and especially culture. Even though Bristol was badly damaged during the Second World War, the Bristolians managed to rebuild their city. Nowadays only two churches from the 12th century, that are left in the original central shopping area, and some fragments of a castle remind from the time before the destruction. The architecture after the rebuilding of the city has attracted recently many street artists, especially those dedicated to graffiti. Since 2011 once a year the street art festival “See No Evil” takes place, initially organized by the well known Bristolian Tom Bingle, alias Inkie. In this festival many graffiti artists from all over the world expose their collection of works of public art. Even some buildings are entirely painted, including a 10 storey office building. During the festival a short film called ‘Who’s Lenny?’ was filmed. 72 street artists are interviewed and it shows how through some managed to make graffiti a legal art, after a group of graffiti artists were invited to paint the courts of law. Apart from “See No Evil” there is also “Here No Evil”. It combines together with the street art festival and provides live music by different well known DJs from Bristol’s music scene. Apart from graffiti arts and music also other kind of street arts is exposed, such as breakdancing, pop-up galleries and body painting.
Other important festivals and fairs that take place in Bristol are for instance the Balloon Fiesta, one of Europe’s largest hot air balloon events. This fair takes usually place in the second week of August and offers a beautiful firework, live music and naturally the opportunity to take a ride in a Hot Air balloon in one of the 100 balloons that are exposed. In June the Foodies Festival takes place. It is nominated the No.1 summer food and drink festival and provides competitions between top chefs and many restaurants that participate.
In general Bristol is well known for its music and film industries, it was even a finalist candidate for the 2008 European Capital of Culture. Bristol has also been announced by the PRS for Music to the most musical city in the UK, at least in the year 2010. There are several punk, funk and dub bands, which come originally from Bristol. Apart from this, the BBC West and the BBC Natural History Unit have their regional headquarters in Bristol. Two of the most famous poets were born in Bristol; Thomas Chatterton (18th c.) and also Robert Southey.
Bristol also counts with important theatres; there is the Bristol Old Vic, the modern New Vic, The Theatre Royal, which is the oldest continuously operating theatre in England, and finally the Bristol Hippodrome, which counts with 1,951 seats.
Regarding the climate, Bristol has a clear advantage compared to other British regions. Through is geographical situation it is actually one of the warmest cities and even one of the sunniest. The average temperature maintains above 0 ºC throughout the year, or to put it more precisely, it is 10.2 ºC – 12 ºC throughout the year.
